A mother must reinvent herself when her family’s life is shaken by an act of random violence during Brazil’s tightening military dictatorship in 1971. Selected by the Brazilian Film Academy for the 2025 Oscar. Eunice Paiva: Martha, you have to help me. My husband is in danger! Martha: Everyone is in danger, Eunice. Featured in Mais Você: Episode of December 3, 2024 (2024). A Festa do Santo ReisWritten by Léo Maia (as Marcio Leonardo)Sung by Tim Maia. Set in Brazil but arriving much later, the film offers a unique insight into life during the dictatorship in 1970s Brazil. Besides getting an insight into what Rio looked like in the 70s, the lifestyle, etc., I would love for people who voted for the extreme right to see how the dictatorship worked, to feel the impact it had on people who were barely politically engaged and who were persecuted. The film skillfully and subtly shows how many small paper cuts in the soul, how easy it was for someone to disappear, how basic rights were violated. It is a highly topical and very important film that sheds light on a wound in Brazilian society that has never really healed. And yet some people wish those painful times would return. I hope you watch this masterpiece and start thinking.
